Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a grant?

Given our small staff and the breadth of organizations we manage and support, we do not accept unsolicited proposals at this time.

What types of organizations get grants?

The Jenifer Altman Foundaiton has historically made grants in four areas of work:

  • Environmental Health and Justice

    • Grants to address the impact of chemicals on human and ecological health, and to develop and strengthen an integrated global environmental health and justice movement.

  • Bolinas Community Projects

    • Grants that contribute to the well-being of the small coastal community of Bolinas, California, where Jenifer Altman spent the last years of her life.

  • Commonweal

    • Jenifer Altman had a strong desire to ensure continued support of Commonweal's work. JAF makes a sustaining grant to Commonweal each year.

  • Partnership Projects

    • Much of our most significant work has been done through partnerships with other foundations that share our values. Among the grants supported through those partnerships are the following: Please see our grants list here.

What programs do you manage?

JAF works with individual donors, and small and large foundations on portfolios centered around environmental health and justice issues (global, regional and domestic). Please go to this page to learn more about our collaborations.
